Dato’ Seri Dr. Lee Chong Wei was born on October 21, 1982, in Bagan Serai, Perak. He grew up in a humble family with four siblings. Despite living in modest circumstances, his passion for pursuing his dreams never faded.
As a child, Chong Wei preferred playing basketball. However, his mother discouraged outdoor activities due to the hot weather. From there, he was introduced to badminton, which would later become a major turning point in his life.
His talent was spotted by a local coach, and shortly after, he received more structured training that honed his skills to compete at a higher level.
A Childhood Story Full of Struggle
Before becoming a legend, Chong Wei had to face various obstacles. His poor family could not afford a racket. His father only earned RM800 a month, making it difficult to cover even basic needs.
However, a father's love is extraordinary. Despite knowing the financial constraints, his father was willing to sacrifice and bought a Pro Kennex racket worth RM160 for his son to join the Milo Cup, his first tournament.
At the age of 13, Chong Wei began working at a sports shop to earn his own income. Every day, he would string 20 to 30 rackets and ask for his wages to be paid in new rackets. Unfortunately, all those rackets were stolen during a break-in at their home. Yet, that did not break his spirit.
From Bagan Serai to the International Arena
Lee Chong Wei's brilliance continued to shine when he was accepted into the national team at the age of 17, under the guidance of Misbun Sidek. That was where his professional career began.
He dominated various international tournaments and set a record as the world number one player in the BWF rankings for 349 weeks, including 199 consecutive weeks.
His diligence and focus made him one of the most feared names in the global badminton arena, alongside world legends like Lin Dan and Peter Gade.
Unforgettable Olympic Moments
Lee Chong Wei became the only Malaysian athlete to win three silver medals in the Olympic Games – Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016.
Although he never brought home the gold, his struggles in the Olympic finals often earned him immense respect. He is known not only for his skills but for his unyielding fighting spirit.

Retiring with Dignity
Dato’ Seri Dr. Lee Chong Wei announced his retirement on June 13, 2019, after being diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. The decision shocked fans but was accepted with great respect.
As a tribute, he was appointed as the Chef de Mission for Malaysia to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, even though he could not attend physically.
Although he is no longer playing on the court, he continues to contribute to the development of badminton in the country.
