KTMB's Silent Heroes, Sacrifices on the Tracks
Train travel is often considered one of the safest and most comfortable modes of transport. However, behind its smooth operation lies a group of dedicated individuals—the train crew—who act as the backbone of this service. They are the unsung heroes who rarely receive recognition, yet their contribution is immense in ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers.
An Eye-Opening Experience
Recently, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the resilience of the KTMB crew when facing an emergency. While on my way back to Kuala Lumpur on an express train, the driver suddenly sounded the horn repeatedly. Shortly after, there was a loud thud under the carriage, and the train came to an abrupt stop. As it turned out, a herd of cows was crossing the tracks, and a collision was unavoidable.
The incident left several cow carcasses stuck under the carriage, and even the locomotive's air brake pipe system was damaged. If left unattended, this damage could have endangered the journey. However, with calmness and expertise, the train crew acted immediately. Using basic tools, they managed to perform temporary repairs.
With their permission, I helped remove the trapped carcasses. In the scorching heat, we worked together to clear the tracks. After about an hour, all obstacles were cleared, and the journey was able to continue.
Challenges Behind the Duty
This incident is just one of many daily obstacles faced by the KTMB crew. According to KTMB reports, between 2020 and 2023, there were over 50 cases of animals crossing the tracks that disrupted train operations. Additionally, factors such as bad weather, technical failures, and human error also pose challenges.
However, what is impressive is the willingness of this crew to work under high pressure. They are trained to act quickly in emergency situations, including fixing minor damage, handling passenger injuries, and managing panic. All of this is done to ensure the journey remains smooth and safe.
Appreciation for the Unsung Heroes
This experience truly made me realize how great the sacrifices of the KTMB crew are. They work day and night, often in challenging conditions, without expecting praise. Without their patience and courage, train travel would not be as easy and comfortable as we enjoy today.
Therefore, it is only right that we show appreciation to these "silent heroes." Perhaps one day, KTMB could hold a special recognition program for the best crew, or the public could express their gratitude directly to them.
As passengers, we can also play our part by following the rules, not littering, and being patient if delays occur. Remember, behind every smooth journey, there are people sacrificing their time and energy for us.
