Honking Triggers 3 Wild Elephants to Attack Car in Gerik
GERIK – A driver narrowly escaped death after his car was attacked and trampled by three wild elephants in an incident at Kilometer 11 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli, on the night of May 20, 2025.
The victim, a 39-year-old man, was driving a Toyota Vios from Jeli to Gerik before stopping in an area near Sungai Lebey after seeing a herd of elephants crossing.
According to Gerik District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood, the driver turned off his engine and car lights as a precautionary measure.
“However, a honk from another vehicle behind is believed to have provoked the animals, causing three elephants to approach and trample the victim's car,” he said.
The driver acted quickly to exit the car and save himself. He did not suffer any injuries. However, his vehicle sustained total damage — damaged at the front, rear, and both sides.
The victim later went to the Gerik Police Station to file a report at 11:36 PM after the elephants had left the scene.
Perhilitan: Avoid using JRTB at night
The Perak Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) advises JRTB users to avoid using the route at night, especially small vehicles and motorcycles.
Perak Perhilitan Director, Yusoff Shariff, explained that most elephant attacks occur between dusk and early morning, when these animals are active in search of food.
Safety recommendations include:
- Do not honk or use high-beam lights when you see wild animals.
- Do not exit the vehicle to take photos or feed them.
- Obey warning signs installed along the route.
Elephant Zone: Sungai Lebey to JRTB Monument
The area around Sungai Lebey has been identified as a frequent crossing zone for wild animals, especially elephants. This road cuts through their original habitat, making it a high-risk area.
