The Industrial Court ruled on August 10, 2025, that Perak FC Sdn Bhd must pay compensation of RM1.04 million to former head coach, Datuk Lim Teong Kim. The decision was made after the court found he was unfairly and prematurely dismissed from his original contract.

Lim Teong Kim was appointed as head coach on September 13, 2022, when Perak FC was still competing in the Premier League. He successfully helped the team return to the Super League, but his contract, which was supposed to end after 24 months, was terminated early.

Chronology of Dismissal

After only eight months of service, on May 25, 2023, Perak FC made the decision to terminate Lim's contract abruptly. This action sparked dissatisfaction as there were still 16 months remaining on his contract.

Lim subsequently filed a representation to the Industrial Relations Department to claim the remaining salary he was entitled to. After the conciliation process failed, the case was brought to the Industrial Court for adjudication.

Court Decision

The court ruled that Lim's dismissal was unlawful and ordered Perak FC to pay full compensation worth RM1.04 million, based on his monthly salary of RM65,000. This decision affirms that employment contracts in the football industry are also subject to labor law protections.

Implications for Local Football

This case serves as a reminder to local football clubs to be more careful in managing coach or player contracts. Furthermore, it demonstrates that sports professions also require clear and fair protection of workers' rights.

Perak FC has previously faced financial issues, including salary payment delays, which have impacted club operations and team stability. This court decision may place additional pressure on the management.

Lessons from This Case

Lim Teong Kim's victory proves that employees or coaches who feel they have been treated unfairly have the right to seek justice through legal channels. It also reminds employers to adhere to agreed-upon contracts and practice professional human resource management.

Conclusion

The RM1.04 million compensation received by Lim Teong Kim is a result of his courage in defending his rights. This case not only provides a lesson to local football clubs but also serves as an example to all parties in the sports industry regarding the importance of respecting agreements and fairness in employment.
