Famous Hup Teck Soy Sauce Factory to Close After 111 Years of Operation
The Hup Teck Soy Sauce factory, a long-standing brand sought after by its fans, particularly within the Chinese community, has finally announced it will cease operations on January 28, 2025.
The announcement was made via Hup Teck's official Facebook page. Hup Teck admits that this decision was made with a heavy heart. "This is a difficult decision and we are truly saddened to say goodbye after 111 years. We will close our doors on Tuesday, January 28, 2025," wrote Hup Teck.
Hup Teck began operations in 1914 in Gopeng, Perak, and has become a part of the culinary heritage for many in Malaysia.
Operating for over a century, the company is famous for its traditional soy sauce production techniques passed down from one generation to the next.
Around the factory area, there are many clay pots placed in the courtyard. This demonstrates the authenticity and tradition in the processing of Hup Teck brand soy sauce.
Despite having operated for a long time and having many loyal customers, Hup Teck faced challenges in continuing this traditional soy sauce business due to the declining health of its aging manager.
Additionally, the lack of a successor willing to continue this family business is also a primary reason behind the closure of the Hup Teck soy sauce factory.
News of the Hup Teck factory closure has shocked and saddened many loyal customers. Most have shared nostalgic stories about the taste of the soy sauce that has been a part of their lives since childhood.
The closure of the Hup Teck soy sauce factory also marks the end of an era that was not just a business, but a cultural identity, especially for the Chinese community in Gopeng, Perak.
Hup Teck has played a role in preserving the tradition and art of authentic soy sauce making for generations. However, with the end of this enterprise, there is concern that this heritage will eventually be lost to time.
