Extreme Heatwave: Schools in Selama Advised to Postpone Outdoor Activities
Principals and headmasters of schools in Selama, Perak have been asked to temporarily suspend all physical activities outside the classroom due to an unusual heatwave with temperatures reaching between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius.
This directive was issued by A. Sivanesan, the Perak State Executive Council member for Health, Human Resources, National Integration, and Indian Community Affairs. He emphasized that this measure is temporary and not mandatory, and will only be implemented until temperatures return to normal.
"Based on information from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the weather is expected to change starting in October. So, if possible, avoid any outdoor activities at schools for the time being," he said.
"If they must be held, limit the duration to early morning for only one or two hours. Sports activities and any other outdoor programs are also advised to be postponed," he added when met by reporters during a visit to a modern, eco-friendly, and pollution-free pig farm in Ayer Kuning today.
Sivanesan also advised the public, especially the school community, to maintain body hydration by drinking enough water. He urged schools in Selama to ensure that there is an adequate supply of drinking water for students' needs.
For workers exposed to hot weather, such as road maintenance staff, he advised them to schedule their work earlier and take precautions to avoid heatstroke.
"Hospitals and public clinics across the state have been prepared since last March to handle cases related to these extreme temperatures," he explained.
He also reminded the public to immediately seek treatment at the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms of heatstroke to avoid serious complications.
