Bagan Datuk Waterfront Square Transforms 'Cowboy Town' into a Tourist Attraction
The Bagan Datuk Waterfront Square has transformed the town from what was once called a "cowboy town" into an attractive tourist destination, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said the development of the square has made Bagan Datuk a popular location among local tourists, especially on weekends.
"It is a major change. Previously, this town was called a cowboy town and was even considered outdated. But now, I receive complaints about traffic congestion every weekend – that is a 'good problem' for this town," said Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk.
He said this while officiating the official opening of the Bagan Datuk Waterfront Square here today, which was attended by over 500 guests and local residents.
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, officiated the square, which began construction in 2019.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the square consists of several project components, including the construction of the Bagan Datuk Tourism Jetty Terminal, recreational and leisure facilities, as well as the conservation of shop facades and road improvements around Bagan Datuk town.
"In addition, the Waterfront Square landscape is beautified with a coconut shell replica featuring a water fountain, the BD Walk building, and a 'jong' (ancient merchant ship) replica equipped with children's play equipment and historical exhibits inside and on the ship," he explained.
He added that with this square, local residents and visitors can now spend quality time with their families while enjoying the sunset against the backdrop of the enchanting Perak River estuary.
"Other attractions such as children's push-car rentals, local busking group performances, and stalls also enliven the weekend night atmosphere at this square, while helping to improve the socio-economy of the local community," he said.
