The Second Grandson of the 30th Sultan of Perak

22 Jan 2019 · 3 min read · 165 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

It all began in 1926 during the reign of the 3rd modern Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Abdullah, and simultaneously during the reign of the 30th Sultan of Perak,

Sultan Iskandar Shah

.

These two great ruling Sultans were destined to become in-laws on May 23, 1926, when the only son of the Sultan of Pahang, Tengku Abu Bakar, and the daughter of the Sultan of Perak, Raja Fatimah, were united in marriage. As all loyal readers of orangperak.com are aware, marriages between royalty from any kingdom have been common practice since long ago and continue to happen to this day. When a prince and princess from two different states unite, it is something that has a very positive impact on strengthening the good relationship between the people of both states.

On October 24, 1930, four years after their marriage, the happy royal couple was blessed with an heir, a handsome prince named Tengku Ahmad Shah (now Sultan Ahmad Shah). His Highness Tengku Ahmad Shah was born at Istana Mangga Tunggal in Pekan, Pahang, and became the second child of Tengku Abu Bakar and Raja Fatimah after the birth of their daughter, Tengku Ainon.

Six years after Tengku Abu Bakar and Raja Fatimah became husband and wife, the Sultan of Pahang at the time, Sultan Abdullah, passed away on June 22, 1932. He passed away at the age of 57, and indirectly, Tengku Abu Bakar was immediately ascended to the throne as the Sultan of Pahang, bearing the title Sultan Abu Bakar, while Raja Fatimah became the Tengku Ampuan Besar of Pahang on June 24, 1932. Returning to the story of Sultan Ahmad Shah, did you know that he was actually the second grandson of the 30th Sultan of Perak? The birth of Sultan Ahmad at that time certainly brought great joy to the Sultan of Perak and the royal family in Pahang. However, on August 4, 1938, Sultan Ahmad Shah, who was 8 years old at the time, lost his beloved grandfather with the passing of

Sultan Iskandar Shah

. Initially, Sultan Ahmad Shah received his early education at a Malay school in Pekan and later continued his education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). Like many other students, Sultan Ahmad Shah was not spared from the impact of World War II, which disrupted his education. What is interesting about this Sultan of Pahang is that he is said to have learned the Japanese language during the Japanese military occupation of Malaya.

When the second grandson of the 30th Sultan of Perak reached the age of 35, Sultan Ahmad Shah served as the Chief Officer of the Federal Infantry Battalion based at Kem Batu 5, Mentakab. His presence in the military made the people admire him, and he was described as a prince chosen by the people's hearts and one who was very caring. Sultan Ahmad Shah was later ascended to the throne as the 5th modern Sultan of Pahang on May 8, 1974. This was because his father, Sultan Abu Bakar, passed away on May 7, 1974, at the age of 69. The passing of Sultan Abu Bakar and the ascension of Sultan Ahmad Shah as the Sultan of Pahang occurred when Sultan Ahmad Shah was 44 years old.

Not to be forgotten is the information that Sultan Ahmad Shah was the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. He served as the head of state from his installation on April 26, 1979, until his term ended on April 25, 1984. Sultan Ahmad Shah is proof that the State of Perak and the State of Pahang are also related, just like the State of Perak and the State of Johor, where

the current Permaisuri of Johor was formerly a Princess of Perak

. Daulat Tuanku, Daulat Tuanku, Daulat Tuanku.
