The Legend of Puteri Limau Purut in Perak (Part 1)

12 Mar 2017 · 3 min read · 412 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

In ancient times, there was a king in Perak named Sultan Mahmud Iskandar Syah who reigned from a throne based in Geronggong in Mukim Pulau Tiga. His Majesty had no sons or daughters, only four siblings, two men and two women. The eldest male held the title Yang di Pertuan Muda and resided in Kampung Pulau Tiga, which is now known as Kampung Tok Paduka Raja.

His Majesty passed away before the others and was given the title Al Marhum Pulau Tiga. One of the women, who was titled Syah Alam Muda Pulau Tiga after her passing, was Tuan Puteri Limau Purut. Some people called her Tuan Puteri Menara Konkong, while another sister was titled Syah Alam Bongsu Sayong because she passed away in Sayong. Their personal names remain unknown. As the story goes, one day a royal delegation from Aceh arrived at the Sultan of Perak's palace in Geronggong to propose to Tuan Puteri Limau Purut. The delegation was granted an audience with the Sultan to present their purpose. After hearing their request, the Sultan ordered that the answer be deferred to a later time. The delegation then returned to their own land to report the delay. After some time, Tuan Puteri Limau Purut, who knew nothing of the proposal, learned that the King of Aceh intended to marry her. She was overjoyed, as she had long wished to go on a picnic upstream to soothe her sorrowful heart. Consequently, her handmaidens and attendants prepared all the royal picnic supplies and loaded them onto boats. The Princess's fleet of boats traveled upstream, stopping at various villages along the riverbank. At every place they stopped, the villagers came to pay their respects and brought offerings such as rice, vegetables, and other items until the boats were full.

Not long after, they arrived at a place where they stopped, went ashore, and prepared for their picnic. The handmaidens and attendants went about their respective duties. By divine providence, as the Princess was cutting a cucumber, the knife blade slipped and cut her finger. The Princess exclaimed, "If the blood from this wound on my finger is white, I shall pass away here." Unexpectedly, the blood that flowed from the Princess's wound was indeed white. Shortly thereafter, Tuan Puteri Limau Purut passed away on that spot.

News of Tuan Puteri Limau Purut's passing was presented to the Sultan in Geronggong. His Majesty was deeply saddened by the death of his younger sister, Tuan Puteri Limau Purut. He traveled upstream, bringing all the royal funeral regalia to lay the Princess to rest. Once the burial of Puteri Limau Purut was completed, the Sultan returned to the palace and immediately sent an envoy to Aceh to inform them that Tuan Puteri Limau Purut had passed away.

The King of Aceh was enraged upon hearing the news brought by the Perak envoy, claiming that this was merely a ruse to reject the marriage proposal. The King of Aceh immediately ordered his troops to prepare to attack Perak. The Acehnese war fleet set sail for Perak. Unfortunately, the Perak Kingdom had made no preparations, as this event was completely unexpected. Continued in
