Sultan Mansur Shah I (2nd Sultan of Perak)

17 Jan 2020 · 3 min read · 347 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

Raja Mansur, the son of Sultan Muzaffar Shah I and his wife Tun Terang, was appointed as the second Sultan of Perak to succeed his father.

The late Sultan Mansur Shah I (2nd Sultan of Perak) resided in the area of Kota Lama Kanan, located near Sayong, Kuala Kangsar. According to the history of the Perak kings, there was a time when Sultan Mansur Shah, accompanied by Bendahara Megat Terawis, traveled upriver to Hulu Perak and established the northern border between the state of Perak and the state of Reman. The border was marked by the Sultan on a large rock in a place called Tapong, and this large rock, which served as a boundary marker, was named Batu Belah. It is said that the Batu Belah used as the boundary marker was split by the late Sultan Mansur Shah I (2nd Sultan of Perak) using his own sword.

The establishment of the boundary marker was agreed upon by the Raja of Reman, and that remained the border between the state of Perak and the state of Reman until the end of the 18th century. Tin mines around the Kelian Intan area in Hulu Perak were included within the territory of Perak, and Sultan Mansur Shah appointed a representative to collect taxes from the miners. Since then, the state of Perak began to develop and prosper due to the tax revenue collected from the tin mines around the state, especially from the Kelian Intan area. During the reign of Sultan Mansur Shah I, the Siamese attacked the state of Perak. Siamese soldiers landed at Pangkalan Lumut and fought against the people of Perak under the leadership of the Sultan's son-in-law, Raja Ali. Eventually, Perak was defeated by the Siamese, and Raja Ali was killed in an area now known as Setiawan. Since then, the state of Perak began sending the Bunga Mas (Golden Flower) to the Siamese kingdom annually as tribute, and the Perak government allowed the Siamese to purchase tin without imposing any taxes. According to the history of Aceh during the reign of Sultan Ali Riayat Shah, also known as Sultan Husain, who ruled Aceh from 1568 to 1575: The Acehnese military forces attacked and defeated Perak in 1573. Sultan Mansur Shah I, along with his wife and son, were captured and taken to Aceh. Upon arriving in Aceh, the eldest son of Sultan Mansur Shah I was married to an Acehnese princess named Raja Puteri. Later, Raja Alauddin was made the Sultan of Aceh with the title Sultan Alauddin Mansur Shah.

Not long after being in Aceh, Sultan Mansur Shah I was sent back by the Acehnese government to the state of Perak to occupy the throne under the suzerainty of Aceh. However, the history of the Perak kings states that Sultan Mansur Shah I was actually not captured and was not taken to Aceh together with his son. Instead, only one of his sons was taken, and after being appointed Sultan of Aceh, the Sultan of Aceh sent his men to retrieve his father, Sultan Mansur Shah I, to be brought to Aceh. Before Sultan Mansur Shah I was taken to Aceh, the Sultan of Perak had married the daughter of a Tok Batin (Orang Asli leader) in Kuala Kinta, and it is said that the descendants of his child became the Panglima Kinta. What is generally known is that Sultan Mansur Shah I passed away in the state of Perak in 1577, with stories passed down through generations regarding his death that remain quite mysterious. The circumstances of Sultan Mansur Shah I's death are not officially known, and it is only said that he disappeared or vanished after performing Friday prayers at the Kota Lama Kanan Mosque.

Since the event of the Sultan of Perak vanishing after Friday prayers, the people began to assume that the Sultan had passed away, and the late Sultan Mansur Shah I was given the title Marhum Kota Lama Kanan.

In 1916, during the reign of Sultan Idris I (28th Sultan of Perak), a mosque was rebuilt on the site of the Kota Lama Kanan Mosque to commemorate Sultan Mansur Shah I, and a tombstone was placed in the first row of the mosque. References
