SOFEA, The Nostalgic Rock Band from Ipoh, Perak
Pure nostalgia, SOFEA is a Malaysian rock band that has been popular since the 1980s, hailing from Ipoh, Perak. The band was formed in 1983, originally naming themselves SYJ after their manager, Syed Yusuf Jamalulail.
The band SYJ originally stemmed from the group Ex-December, also founded by Syed Yusof Jamalulail, who was a traffic police officer in Ipoh at the time. The band's name was changed to SYJ in 1978. The original members of SYJ in 1978 consisted of Halim (guitar and keyboard), Man Gemok (bass), Pak Su Nor (drums – later replaced by Din Urko), and Hamidi (flute). The female vocalist was Rohana Kassim. SOFEA, established by Syed Yusuf Jamalulail (known as Pak Syed) under the name SYJ in 1983, began in Kampung Manjoi, Ipoh, Perak. At that time, SYJ only performed at wedding receptions, and Amir was not the original vocalist for SYJ in 1986. He was recruited during an audition session for the band. Eventually, Amir joined SYJ in 1985. At that time, only Pak Syed's house had a jamming studio. The original SYJ singer, Azmi Mansor (better known by his nickname Rod), later withdrew from the band. In 1986, SYJ'86 participated in the Battle of the Bands competition organized by Ali Bakar. Their songs were subsequently included in the Battle Of The Bands 1 and 2 albums, such as 'Hati Syaitan', 'Orang Timur', and 'Mata Sepet'. After these albums were released, Syed Yusuf Jamalulail stopped managing the group due to the controversies sparked by the provocative lyrics of the aforementioned songs.
They also sparked further controversy by adopting the image of Western rock bands like Mötley Crüe and Kiss. Due to the relentless criticism surrounding the name SYJ, they eventually changed the band's name to SOFEA. The idea for the name SOFEA came from Man Rani, named after his girlfriend at the time, Julia Sofea. The name SOFEA emerged while the band was in a van heading to one of their performances. The role of band manager was also taken over by Man Rani.
In 1987, they released their first album titled KEMBALI. The album contained 10 songs and was produced by Warnada Sdn. Bhd. The album also featured an external musician, Raymond Lim. The SOFEA lineup also changed in the drum position, with Nahar replacing Eduat due to the latter's health issues. Previously, Nahar had played part-time for SYJ, so after Eduat's departure, they immediately contacted Nahar to join SOFEA. In 1988, SOFEA released their second album titled ANAK LIAR. This album marked the pinnacle of SOFEA's success, winning several awards such as a platinum gold disc, best album cover, best sound system, and more.
The SOFEA lineup changed once again as Fancy took over the guitar position, replacing Zam. This album also saw Man Rani contributing his vocals to slow rock tracks like 'Bunga Padang Pasir' and 'Suratan Perpisahan', which became iconic hits adored by female rockers at the time. It was then that Man Rani was dubbed 'Man Glamour' by Mama Juwie. In 1989, Nahar served as the drummer once again, and Fancy remained as the guitarist for their 3rd album, BONEKA PENTAS. Most of the songs on this album were composed by the SOFEA members themselves. The song 'Syurga Di Hujung Jarum' featured a vocal duet between Amir and Man Rani.
This time, SOFEA's concept and image changed completely due to the demands of the record label. The song 'Bungaku Kerinduan' was the most touching track, as it was dedicated to Man Rani's first wife, Norbi binti Ahmad. Their marriage was blessed with a son named Muhammad Amin Bin Othman Rani. In 1990, SOFEA released their final album titled MIMPI DAN AIR MATA. At this time, Amir, as the vocalist, withdrew from continuing to produce the album due to conflicts between the SOFEA members. The BONEKA PENTAS album marked the beginning of the decline for SYJ SOFEA, as most members no longer had the interest to continue the band's struggle, especially Man Rani.
Wishing to feature Eduat with SOFEA, they agreed to produce this album even though they knew it would not yield results. The vacancy left by Amir was filled by Zan (Alang). Meanwhile, Eduat returned to reclaim the drummer position he had previously left, taking over from Nahar. Atanka replaced the guitarist position left by Fancy, who had gone on to form the band LEON.
