Muslims in Perak & Malaysia Show Solidarity, Raise RM2.1 Million to Save Masjid Ar-Ridzuan
Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini, President of the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk), expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all Muslims in Perak and Malaysia for their commitment to fulfilling their social and religious responsibilities in saving the Masjid Jamek Ar-Ridzuan in Alor Pongsu, Bagan Serai.
As of yesterday, a total of RM2.1 million has been successfully raised through direct contributions to the mosque's bank account – a proud achievement that reflects a shared spirit in defending places of worship. This demonstrates that issues concerning Islamic religious affairs are very close to the hearts of Muslims in Malaysia.
Waqf Land Issue: History and Challenges
This was stated by Tan Sri Annuar Zaini during a special press conference regarding the Masjid Jamek Ar-Ridzuan land issue held at the Conference Room, Kompleks Islam Darul Ridzuan, Ipoh, yesterday afternoon.
According to him, the mosque was built in 1931 on waqf land Lot 6269. However, a re-survey in 2020 revealed that part of the mosque's structure – including the prayer hall, toilets, and women's ablution area – is located on Lot 6271 (93.83 square feet), which is privately owned land.
“Lot 6271 was once verbally endowed as waqf by the late Haji Ahmadiah, but there were no official documents or transfer of ownership to the relevant authorities. The land was later sold to a company in 2002 and is now owned by another individual,” he explained.
Efforts to Purchase Land for the Future of the Mosque
In 2024, the mosque's congregation committee sought to purchase Lot 6271 as well as Lot 6270 (for future development) at an offer price of RM1.8 million. This issue was also raised in the Perak State Legislative Assembly and received serious attention from MAIPk.
“This is a critical step to ensure the legitimacy of the land status, the continuity of mosque operations, and the interests of the congregation,” emphasized Tan Sri Annuar.
With strong support from the community, MAIPk is confident that this problem can be resolved for the sustainability of the Muslim heritage in Alor Pongsu.
