Kampung Lintang in Sungai Siput Utara Overflowing with Trash

29 Jan 2017 · 3 min read · 129 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

Sad! That was the sentiment of an elderly complainant to orangperak.com, which carries a thousand meanings when accompanied by photos of uncollected trash on the main road of Kampung Lintang in Sungai Siput Utara, where the complainant resides. It is not that the authorities failed to provide trash bins; they are available and large! However, no one has been assigned to collect the waste from these bins for a long time.

Since we do not have support crew in the Sungai Siput area, we are unable to monitor the actual situation on the ground. However, the photos provided by the complainant are sufficient for us to share the residents' plight to gain the attention of the responsible parties and the public. According to the complainant, this trash has been left there for a long time, as you can see in the photos we have attached. Because of this, the uncollected waste continues to pile up. Verbal complaints have been made repeatedly to the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council (MPKK), but there has been no action to date. What is the excuse from the authorities? Let us be positive; perhaps the authorities overlooked this issue, and now we want those responsible to immediately rectify the situation before it gets worse.

Admittedly, local residents also have a responsibility and should play an important role in organizing gotong-royong (community clean-ups) and so on. But what is the point of the taxes imposed on the people if the benefits are not returned to them? Some villagers have taken the easy way out by disposing of their trash in the nearby Sungai Pelus. This is very serious because when trash is thrown into the river, it contributes to flooding. Among the negative impacts we foresee in the future are that the river will be completely polluted with foul odors, an unsightly view, and the attraction of snakes or crocodiles that feed on the waste. It is said that the area where the trash is left is located near a school. Is this appropriate and relevant to the values we should show children at that school regarding the culture of leaving trash behind? Of course, it is highly inappropriate; it is not a good example to set for the children studying there. In conclusion, the complainant hopes that the relevant authorities will take immediate action before this bad situation worsens. Recently, floods have occurred frequently in this area, and it will certainly be worse in the future if this continues. What is worrying is that during the recent flood, some claimed to have seen a fairly large python, though its authenticity could not be verified. What can be prevented should be prevented before it is too late.

This is an open complaint from a person named Abu Sahar (not his real name, identity kept confidential upon request), 52, a local resident, via our WhatsApp. If you have a complaint to share, you can send it directly via WhatsApp at 014 605 0005. Do not worry, as the complainant's details will be kept strictly confidential upon request. This is how you can voice complaints that have not received a response; we will help you share them with the public. UPDATE: On February 1, 2017, this issue was resolved by Dato Zolkafly, the Lintang Assemblyman, who personally covered the costs and charges while waiting for the annual allocation from the Municipal Council office. Dato Zolkafly's action as the Lintang Assemblyman should be praised for acting immediately after hearing the complaint about this trash issue. Thank you for your concern, Dato. Love you so much!
