Do Not Stop to Record Accident Sites, Elephants Can Appear at Any Time

The public is advised not to be too eager to stop and record the bus accident site at Kilometer 53 of the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB) because the area is a wild elephant crossing zone.

According to the Director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) Perak, Yusoff Shariff, if there is a need to be at the location, the most suitable time is during the day, between 10 am and 4 pm.

"Elephants usually start appearing from late afternoon until early the next morning. Please be careful. The potential for elephants to appear is real. If it is night or early morning, do not stop there," he emphasized.

Observations at the location found a lot of elephant dung along the road leading to the bus accident scene. In fact, the location is only about 20 minutes from the scene where a baby elephant was killed after being hit by a lorry early last month.

A heavy vehicle driver who was at the location also confirmed that besides elephants, tigers can sometimes appear in the area.

"When we arrive at the Titiwangsa peak, those of us who frequently drive here are cautious, especially at night. In fact, even as we stop and talk here, there might be wild animals watching us," he said when interviewed while his vehicle was stopped to allow authorities to clear the accident area.

Since the bus accident two days ago, many vehicles passing through the area have been seen moving slowly to look at the scene, with some even taking the opportunity to record videos or take pictures.

Authorities are reminding the public to prioritize their safety and follow the advice given to avoid any untoward incidents.
