Development Set to Erase Historic Battle of Kampar Site in Perak

10 Jan 2018 · 3 min read · 182 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

Heritage is a legacy from past generations that cannot be replaced and must be preserved for all our future generations. It is human nature to defend things that are precious and valuable in their lives.

If you have a sense of love for the few remaining pieces of heritage in the country, you are certainly a special person with noble values—the foundation of a human soul—rather than being greedy and focused only on specific interests. However, it is human nature to be constantly eager to pursue development and boost the economy for personal gain and benefit. This is a reality we must all accept, and any location that could be designated as national heritage is forced to face this. For your information, loyal readers of orangperak.com, whether you realize it or not, the Green Ridge area, better known as the site of the Battle of Kampar, is facing the same situation where it is being threatened by destruction due to housing development. In short, this historic site is set to disappear and will be turned into a residential and development area soon. What is happening at Green Ridge, or the Battle of Kampar site, is that the landowner is attempting to develop this historic site into a housing settlement.

Hopefully, any development applications submitted to government departments or agencies will not be approved at all, even if the land status of Green Ridge, or the Battle of Kampar site, is private property.

The attitude of our society today is also a major factor, as there is a complete lack of concern for historic sites. Regardless of whether it is the government or the private sector, from lower-level staff to top officials in any agency or department, no one is taking the fate of Green Ridge seriously; they are merely indifferent.

If the land ownership legal system is the main issue, it appears to be a weakness on the part of local authorities who are completely insensitive to the importance of historic areas. Therefore, it would be better to propose amendments so that such things do not happen to other historic sites. But it is unlikely that this system is the main issue. If development can create economic growth, have you not thought that heritage conservation can also contribute to economic growth? Furthermore, it can boost growth in the tourism and education sectors. What is important is that the purpose and goal of safeguarding the nation's historical heritage are achieved.

Honestly, this does not only happen to the Battle of Kampar site. Many wealthy businesspeople are extremely greedy and do not care at all about historic areas that do not profit them. Accept this reality, even if it is sad. Finally, I ask for your support, dear readers, to share this article so that more people will know what is happening at the historic Green Ridge area. At the very least, this is a struggle we can undertake to defend the fate of Green Ridge. Follow the Facebook page
