Another 140-Year-Old Rain Tree Falls at Taiping Lake Gardens
A sad incident occurred at Taiping Lake Gardens yesterday when a rain tree (Samanea Saman) aged over 140 years fell at Raintree Walk. This iconic tree, which has been a silent witness to colonial history since the 1880s, is believed to have fallen due to strong winds that hit the area during heavy rain.
Photos of the fallen tree quickly went viral on social media, sparking a wave of sadness and disappointment among netizens, especially environmental enthusiasts. Many expressed their sense of loss because this rain tree was not just a tree, but one of the main attractions of Taiping Lake Gardens that has captivated millions of visitors for decades.
This is not the first time a rain tree in the park has fallen. In 2021, another tree of the same species fell due to structural imbalance and storms. At that time, the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) took proactive steps by installing iron supports to strengthen the structures of other at-risk trees. However, this latest incident proves that the advanced age of these trees makes them more vulnerable to natural threats.
Previously, four other rain trees planted since the colonial era had also fallen, leaving a deep impact on Taiping's environmental heritage. Taiping Lake Gardens, which is surrounded by over 90 rain trees, is not only a symbol of natural beauty but also reinforces Taiping's status as a historic town rich in natural heritage.
These trees, planted around the 1880s, are not just ordinary plants. They are part of the identity of Taiping, a town that was once named the third best city in the world in the 2018 Top 100 Sustainable Destinations Awards. Taiping Lake Gardens itself is recognized as a national heritage site, making this incident a major loss not only for Taiping but also for Malaysia.
This incident reminds us of the importance of preserving and protecting the natural treasures that serve as a legacy for future generations. Perhaps now is the time for the authorities to take more proactive steps in ensuring these historic trees continue to stand firm, adorning Taiping Lake Gardens with their unparalleled beauty and history.
