Ambulance Driver Assaulted by Mat Rempit in Taiping
For simply reprimanding a group of Mat Rempit, an ambulance driver suffered the consequences, receiving four stitches to his face after his decision to tell off a group of Mat Rempit who were racing sparked their anger.
In the incident at 1:40 AM on December 17, 2017, near the Taiping Utara Toll Plaza on the North-South Expressway, the 53-year-old man suffered an injury to his right eyebrow, while a female nurse in the ambulance was kicked. The victim, who wished to remain anonymous, said that at the time of the incident, he was with a medical assistant and a nurse, transporting a patient from Hospital Parit Buntar to Hospital Taiping. He stated that upon reaching the traffic light junction near the toll plaza, he saw a group of motorcyclists believed to be racing. "Because their actions were endangering the ambulance's journey, I used the loudspeaker to tell them to give us way. However, my actions angered them; they then swerved to block the ambulance, and after one of the Mat Rempit fell, they became even more furious and continued to block our path with their motorcycles," he said when contacted by a Berita Harian reporter.
As soon as the ambulance stopped, about four to six teenage Mat Rempit riders opened the door and dragged him out of the vehicle before punching him in the face and beating him repeatedly. The nurse attending to the patient in the back tried to help break up the group, but unfortunately, she was kicked as well. When members of the public noticed the incident, the group of Mat Rempit fled, and the victim continued his journey to deliver the patient to the hospital.
After delivering the patient, the victim immediately filed a police report in Taiping before returning to Parit Buntar for medical treatment. "I managed to identify the registration number of one of the teenagers' motorcycles who hit me, while the other motorcycles had no registration numbers. It is understood that the police have identified the owner of the motorcycle involved, and further action and investigations are being carried out," he said.
Everyone knows that this hotspot is often used as an illegal racing circuit involving motorcycles and cars, especially on weekend nights. Typically, from midnight to 3 AM on weekends, there are bound to be groups of Mat Rempit and cars racing there.
