It is human nature to need food to survive. Combined with appetite and taste buds, recipes have been created, passed down since ancient times, and spread across states and even the world. In this article, we have compiled some of the popular foods in the state of Perak. Have you ever tried the dishes we listed? Let's keep reading!
Tempoyak is made from durian flesh. The durian flesh is separated from the seeds, mixed with a little salt, and stored for three to five days at room temperature for the fermentation process. Tempoyak is usually not eaten on its own but is often made into sambal or added to dishes such as gulai tempoyak ikan patin (silver catfish in fermented durian gravy) or pais ikan tempoyak. Tempoyak is not only famous in Perak but also in Pahang, which is quite popular for its gulai ikan patin masak tempoyak. Tempoyak was also recorded in the Hikayat Abdullah as a daily food for the people of Terengganu around 1836, stating it was their favorite food.
Rendang Tok is said to have originated from Kampung Pisang in Batu Gajah and later spread to most districts in Perak. Rendang Tok is a traditional Malay dish that has its own unique taste and deliciousness without the addition of preservatives or artificial flavorings. More uniquely, this Rendang Tok dish is still prepared using traditional methods, namely over a wood-fired stove. This dish is said to have been passed down through generations since ancient times because the cooking method involves traditional spices and ingredients. The name 'Rendang Tok' is also said to have been used since long ago because it was cooked by the elders at that time. It is even more delicious if you use buffalo meat!
Dodol is also quite famous in Melaka and Johor. Making dodol can be said to be very complicated. Many people often try to make it, but not everyone produces high-quality dodol. Usually, those who are skilled at making dodol are the elderly. It is rare for the younger generation to be skilled at making dodol. The ingredients needed to make dodol consist of coconut milk, rice flour, granulated sugar, palm sugar, and salt.
Just talking about it here is enough to make one drool and crave this taucu (fermented soybean paste) dish. Ikan masak taucu is quite popular in the Perak Tengah area. Just go to any restaurant that serves mixed dishes, and this fish cooked in taucu is like a mandatory menu item for lunch. Threadfin bream (ikan kerisi) is the top choice for cooking this taucu dish. It is white and sweet, especially when fresh, large, and tender. In short, it is truly delicious!
Usually, this is a staple food for naughty children in Perak. It is not their favorite food, but it is a favorite of parents or guardians to 'feed' this to their children. It is said that it cannot satisfy a hungry stomach, but it is capable of making someone speechless. It is often given by a father to his child while asking, "Do you want to eat a slap?" (penampar). Some also use terms like wood, hanger, and so on to replace this 'food'. Okay, I'm just joking about this last one :) haha
