Abundant Sea Turtles in Segari, Manjung
Many may not be aware of this, so we would like to share information about the Segari Turtle Hatchery Center. This turtle hatchery is located at Pasir Panjang beach in Segari, Perak. Pasir Panjang beach is situated approximately 2 km from Segari town and 5 km from the junction of Jalan Lumut to Pantai Remis. Pasir Panjang beach is the longest beach in the Manjung District.
Due to the fine sand, lush trees, and an area free from disturbance, Pasir Panjang beach has become an ideal location for turtles to lay their eggs. It is estimated that 90% of the turtles that brave the strong waves to reach here are the Green Turtle and Olive Ridley species. These turtles arrive and land here between March and July every year.
To preserve this marine treasure, the Perak State Government took a wise and proactive step by building the Turtle Hatchery Center in 1990 on a 0.1-acre site. In 1992, an additional 10 acres of land were requested for the site. Subsequently, in 1994, 5.5 acres of land were approved on a Fisheries Department reserve by the Perak State Government.
Among the activities that visitors can enjoy at the Segari Turtle Hatchery Center is viewing exhibitions about turtles and their life cycles. Additionally, visitors can tour the turtle hatchery site, visit the turtle ponds, and most excitingly, you might have the opportunity to witness the release of turtle hatchlings into the sea. It is truly a joy to see the baby turtles!
One of the main objectives of opening the Segari Turtle Hatchery Center was to make it a major tourist attraction in Perak. However, this objective has yet to be fully achieved, as we can see that not many people are aware of the existence of this turtle hatchery in Perak. Regardless, let us work together to promote this location as a destination for Visit Perak Year 2017!
